Sonic bridges
with Derya Yıldırım

The Hamburg-based Derya Yildirim has been on the spearhead of the Turkish-European crossover for several years. The singer and multi-instrumentalist learned piano, guitar, bağlama, oud, and saxophone from childhood. From 2013 to 2016 she studied at the Hamburger Musikhochschule and continued her studies in the subject Bağlama with Taner Akyol at the University of the Arts in Berlin. Yildirim constantly rearranges the rich traditional Turkish poetry and leads it into the future without losing the awareness of the past. With her band »Derya Yildirim & Grup Şimşek«, she released the debut EP »Nem Kaldi« in 2017: a danceable set of well-known Turkish songs in a new, unimagined guise. It combines Anatolian folk music with modern grooves, and hints of psychedelia, jazz, and funk – the new »German-Anatolian psycho-pop sensation« (Junge Welt).
