As a kind of “friendly takeover,” the Pacific Working Group of the German Artists’ Association will host an “imagined journey” on the Veddel peninsula, an open, participatory exchange format exploring the reception of art and culture from Asian countries. Various approaches to mediation and presentation will address the respective artistic experiences from these countries. At the heart of this journey is research from 2025 that led the so-called NAWIAT group to Taiwan. NAWIAT POV also invites Asian artists living in Hamburg. The second day will focus on an open exchange of experiences through conversations, a participatory and open exhibition, and communal co-cooking; connecting moments of culture will be presented as a source of discourse.

Aesthetics and culture from Asian countries have become indispensable in almost all areas of European everyday and popular culture. Whether music, cuisine, or media technology – decisive influences today come from Southeast Asia and shape the local cultural landscape.
While this should be self-evident, it still needs to be emphasized. This influence must now be recognized as original and authentic cultural capital, unlike the colonial appropriation of the past and contrary to recent totalitarian tendencies. Nevertheless, in the wake of this cultural turn, a critical corridor opens up, offering the opportunity to re-understand the European colonial and cultural exploitation of past centuries and to implement genuine cultural restitution.

Exemplary experiences are explored in various workshop formats. The artists reflect on how the culture of China, Taiwan, South Korea, or Japan alters their own standpoint in artistic practice and casts a critical, external gaze on their supposedly dominant culture.
Through a blend of workshops, artist talks, and exhibitions, the respective perspectives on this unique cultural space are shared, questioned, and shaped into a multifaceted structure within the exhibition space.

On Friday, all participants will meet for an initial exchange of perspectives. Short presentations and explanations will introduce the first exhibits, which will be the subject of discussions. By the end of the first day, the foundation will already be laid for a multifaceted, diverse, and interconnected exhibition structure.
The second day will begin with presentations and workshops in which visitors, neighbors, and artists will share their experiences and insights from the Pacific region. The workshop will conclude with a communal cooking session, providing an opportunity to experience a shift in perspective together around the table.
