Lulu MacDonald (JERSEY/HAMBURG)

LULU MACDONALD

Lulu MacDonald (b.1991 England) is a sculptor, researcher, and storyteller who now lives and works in Hamburg. Her homeland, the Channel Island of Jersey, is a source of inspiration for her artistic practice. The nature of the island of her childhood is politically and spiritually significant to her: she experienced summer solstices here in the presence of Neolithic tombs and ran her fingers along the concrete sea wall built by prisoners of war when Jersey was occupied by Nazis during World War II.

MacDonald has long been concerned with the climate crisis, particularly with regards to the connectivity between humans and nature and the vulnerability of that connection, as well as power structures and the perception of nature as a profitable, exploitable space. She often explores such themes in her extended interactive walks, essays, and performances.

MacDonald’s relationship with research takes its cue from the philosophical ideas of musician Pauline Oliveros, who advocates for bringing deep listening into an artistic practice of deep research to engage with multiple strands of interconnectedness.

Using storytelling, visuals, and science, MacDonald creates installations which, on the one hand, construct the emotional state as the micro and, on the other hand, projects and stretches it to the world’s crisis at its macro. MacDonald has exhibited internationally and has worked in the Bundes Kunst Kollektion in Bonn. MacDonald is represented by Åplus Galerie in Berlin.
