We are pleased to present the Art of Anpu Varkey, our Guest artist for the Hamburg India Week 2021. Together with women from the Veddel, she elaborated in a workshop the concepts of culture, empathy, and the idea if we read this together as cultural empathy. The participants learned and tried out the possibilities of stencil and street art to express their very own perspectives to amplify the visibility of women in the neighborhood.

When do we feel the other, when do I feel the others, when do I connect this perception with emotions, sincere sympathy, and the need to change my behavior? How can the individual and collective (missing) perception of empathy be problematized and trained with the means of art and philosophy? Does empathy require a feeling of connectedness or do we first have to recognize the separation from one another?
